I rarely ever begin a drawing or painting with much foreknowledge of what I am going to create. I have no formal training and prefer to experiment rather than emulate any particular artist or school of art. The greatest inspiration arrives through music. However, I have immersed myself in as much art as possible and do have quite a few favorite artists. It is impossible to escape their influences completely. There is nothing new under the sun but hopefully I can continue to squeeze out fresh configurations.  Each gallery is a family of works related by technique or style.

The influences of my most recent trip to Recife, Brazil are most evident in "Scene and Unseen." Recife is a city of sculpture. Builders there are required by law to commission a sculpture for every edifice they construct. Pale, frozen figures preside over rich greenery bearing witness to the oppression of the 1970's and current socio-economic injustices. They are expressions of a submerged national sorrow that disturbs our perceptions of an otherwise vibrant, festive culture. In a similar manner "Scene and Unseen" pairs antithetical worlds separated by the thinnest of borders. Absurd apocalyptic visions exist above, below or beside sensual jungles populated by hoards of mythical beasts.

"Another Flask of Weird" and "Pandemonium Fanfare" showcase experiments in the ‘Rorschach' style. Indelible lines are drawn or painted without focusing or looking at the paper all. Occasionally an image presents itself at first glance like a holy apparition arising from stains. But most of the time the details are added one ‘compartment' or ‘zone' at a time until a ‘constellation' has completed itself. It is more a process of revelation than creation. The finished products evoke a panorama of interpretations from viewers. Just like Rorschach inkblots, each interpretation is unique to the interpreter. Consider these two galleries a hall of mirrors if you like.

"Sketchbook" and "Brazilian Sketchbook" are literally cut from my sketchbooks and polished. There you will find variations of figures and faces in both familiar and alien settings. Some of them are merely humorous caricatures. Others are simple but expressive. Anything goes.

"Constellations" showcases smaller drawings and paintings in any of the aforementioned styles.
