Carrancas (Three Different Ones)
The original carrancas were carved into the prow of Portuguese river boats in colonial Brazil. The superstitious viewed them as protective talismans while the pragmatists used it as a tool to frighten hostile indigenous people. Today they are considered to be one of the folk symbols of the nation of Brazil itself.
